IMT Hyderabad, 11th July 2025: Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Hyderabad, had the honor of hosting Mr Vinay Narayanan Senior Vice President, Markets - Liquidity and Financing Operations at BNY, for an engaging session on “Inside the Engine Driving Operational Excellence”. Accompanied by Ms Hanna Evelin from Human Resources, Mr Narayanan delivered a compelling and insightful session that shed light on the often-overlooked but critical function of operations in the financial industry.
Mr Narayanan began by engaging the audience with a simple yet powerful question: “How many of you know what operations is?” He elaborated that operations is more than a back-end process — it is a chain of activities that forms the backbone of any organization. Describing it as “90% repetitive and 100% essential,” he highlighted the three foundational pillars of operational success: quality, agility, and mindset.
A key focus of the session was the concept of the “knowledge circle.” Mr Narayanan differentiated between the 80% who view knowledge as finite and the 20% who push boundaries, delve deeper, and drive innovation — the “deep divers.” Expanding on the theme of “Execution to Ownership,” he emphasized the shift from asking “How?” to understanding “Why?” in professional roles. Ownership, especially in the banking sector, is about seeking alternatives, improving processes, and delivering outcomes with efficiency and insight.
To stand out in the workplace, Mr Narayanan recommended a five-step approach: Observe, Spurt, Think, Suggest, and Manage. These actions, he suggested, differentiate proactive contributors from passive executors. Highlighting the value of networking in finance, he encouraged students to build relationships and understand the ecosystem of people and processes. “At BNY, we are not reacting to change — we are leading it for the industry,” he asserted.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment where students asked about automation, AI integration at BNY Mellon, and tips for excelling in interviews, particularly for those from non-finance backgrounds. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Mr Prakash Pathak, Head, Corporate Relations Office, IMT Hyderabad appreciating Mr Narayanan and Ms Evelin for their time, insights, and inspiration.
